Hero Stories

Below are the stories of a few of the Heroes we know. Some are conquering childhood cancer with the help of their families, physicians, and a host of other Heroes. Others are individuals or groups who are being a hero by helping to raise awareness and money or by supporting children with cancer in other ways. Please contact us if you know of a Hero that would like to have his or her story on our site.

Children and Teens

Reina

Smithfield
Hi, my name is Reina and I am 16 years old. I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer) in December of 2009. Through this God has given me complete peace and without Him I know I wouldn't have been able to make it. It started a couple years ago when I felt the Lord leading me to be a Pediatric Oncologist. I then started thinking about, how could I understand what the children were going through so I could be a better help to them. So I started to pray to God that if it was his will for me to be an Oncologist that he would help me to better understands what these kids were going through. A couple months later I started to get a very bad pain in my leg that turned out to be cancer.

Connor

Richmond, VA
Connor is a blond haired, blue-eyed, smart and determined child with Down Syndrome who was originally diagnosed with leukemia and a spinal tumor in April of 2004. After the surgery to remove the tumor, he spent the next six months in and out of the hospital receiving chemotherapy. The surgery damaged his spine, so he also had to learn to use his right hand again as well as walk again. It was amazing that he was able to start school in the fall. He used a little walker and he would speed down the school hallways. He was also determined to climb the playground equipment much to the dismay of his teachers. During the summer of 2006, while on vacation at the beach, Connor had trouble walking and we quickly returned home. We found out that his spine was growing crookedly from the prior surgery, crushing his spinal cord. He spent the next months in the hospital recovering from extensive surgery to repair his spine. He handled it all in stride, charming everyone with his sheer determination. He especially loved watching Christmas shows in July, and started his ongoing love for Scooby-Doo.

Matt celebrated his 15th birthday in October 2006, and a month later, on November 15th, was diagnosed with T-cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). At 15 years of age, with a 7-inch mass in his chest and a white blood cell count of around 280,000 (the normal being from 5,000 to 10,000), he was classified as high risk. Fortunately, he took well to initial treatment. Within a few days he had shed 3 pounds of tumor cells, and weeks later, an examination of his bone marrow did not show one bad cell. This did not mean his treatment was over, though. In fact, the most intense phase of his treatment had not even begun.

Richmond, Virginia
My name is Chad Bowen and I am a 15 year cancer survivor. At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (T-Cell). At that age it was really hard for me to understand what cancer is, and what it can do to a person physically and mentally. I remember saying, “Cancer is something old people get right?” Well it didn’t take me long to realize the misconception of cancer. Cancer has no prejudice, nor does it just affect the person that was diagnosed with the disease. It affects our loved ones as well.
